This woodland themed nursery for my son was so much fun to design. With my husband being from the mountains of North Carolina and both of us being avid outdoors people, I knew I wanted my son’s nursery to feel like it was in the mountains surrounded my trees. With a deep blue mountain wall mural and accents of thick green forest colors, I think I achieved my goal for my son’s woodland theme nursery! Woodland Nursery: Accent Wall
This mountain wall mural is one of my favorite things about my son’s nursery. It may look complicated or expensive, but it is actually quite easy! It can be done with only two small cans of paint and less than $100. If you are interested, check out my blog post on how to paint a mountain wall mural where I share ideas and inspiration!
Woodland Nursery: Color Scheme
When designing any room, it is always a good idea to decide on a color scheme at the beginning of the project. Here are the general steps I use to decide on paint colors and design a space:
- Step 1: Decide on a general color scheme. For example, I knew I wanted my son’s nursery to be forest green and deep shades of blue.
- Step 2: Browse the internet for items you might want to incorporate into your space. For this nursery, I searched for crib sheets.
- Step 3: Pick our wall and furniture paint colors out of the items bought for the room. For example, once I found the crib sheets I wanted, I matched a green paint color from them for the furniture. I just find it a lot easier to match paint colors to physical items from the room since there are infinite paint colors and limited items to buy. It also helps a room to look more cohesive.
Nursery Furniture
Crib
The crib in my son’s nursery was custom made for my husband when he was a baby. I searched far and wide for a crib, and I was so excited when my mother-in-law remembered this heirloom crib. It had to be completely refinished, which was quiet the job, but I am so proud of how it turned out and so proud my son gets to sleep in something so special!
Chair
No nursery is complete without a chair. I do not have enough good things to say about this nursery chair. It rocks, swivels, and reclines! Also, the sides on the top make a perfect place to rest your head while you are reclining because – trust me- you’ll find yourself sleeping in this chair more often than not! The performance fabric makes it easy to clean, and I also love that the recline handle is hidden between the side of the chair and the cushion. I chose the Performance Cream fabric, but it also comes in Ivory Boucle, and Performance Charcoal.
Dresser and Nightstand
Finding a dresser I really loved at a price I was willing to pay was a very hard task. After checking a few thrift stores and finding everything to be overpriced for its condition, I finally decided on the Ikea TARVA 6-drawer chest and the Ikea TARVA nightstand. They were easy to assemble and are holding up really well 2 years in. All the stained portions are Minwax Provencial, and the painted portions are the color Flora by Valspar. I also traded out the wood knobs that come with the dresser for these wide, black drawer pulls also from IKEA to give it a more modern and elevated style.
Woodland Nursery Decor
Finding decorations for my son’s woodland themed nursery was my absolute favorite part. Decorations don’t have to be expensive or over the top, just whatever speaks to you. For example, I found a cool looking rock while hiking when I was pregnant, so I collected it, and it is sitting on a shelf in my son’s room.
Wall Decor
These watercolor wall art images are perfect for a cozy woodland nursery, and they fit perfectly above the dresser.
DIY Initial
This DIY bark wood initial was SO easy to make! All you need to do is cut your letter out of a piece of cardboard and hot glue bark onto it. I collected bark off an old rotten tree that had fallen in my yard. You could also use little sticks, storebought moss, or fake flowers for a little girl – there are so many options when it comes to DIY!! I hung it onto the wall with command strips.
DIY Wood Shelves
These wood shelves were also very easy to make and added a more custom look to the room. I used two pieces of 1×6 nailed together at a 90-degree angle and two tree limb pieces cut at 45 degrees on both ends for supports. The wood is stained Minwax Provencial.
If you’re not into DIY, these live edge wood corner shelves are also really neat!
Woodland Shelf Decor
While searching for decor ideas on pinterest, I found this plan for mountain bookends made out of scrap 2×4’s and 2×6’s. They turned out so cute and really tight to wall mural in with the rest of the room. If you’re not into DIY, these mountain bookends on Amazon are very similar and these are also super cute!
Woodland Nursery Bedding
These Pine tree crib sheets are absolutely perfect for a woodland themed nursery! They also have changing pad covers, and blankets in the same pattern.
Woodland Nursery Storage
You can never have enough baskets when you have a little one!! These woven rattan baskets are perfect to put under a crib or on a shelf to store toys in. I also love these little canvas baskets with trees on them. They fit a woodland theme perfectly, and they are better for storing stuffed animals and cloth items in because they won’t pull the fabric.
