Planning this little boy’s birthday party was so much fun! Having a little farm-loving cowboy, I knew his first birthday had to be themed “My First Rodeo!” In this post, I will show all the great Amazon finds and fun DIY decorations I did to make his first birthday party affordable and fabulous!

The Cake
I decided to make the cake myself and it probably wasn’t the best decision I’ve ever made in my life (lol). I was already busy getting everything else ready and the cake was a pretty big undertaking! But, I’m happy with how it turned out, and it was SO delicious!
The bottom layer was made out of two 9 inch round cakes, and the top was two 6 inch round cakes. I decided I would just take the top layer off for my son to eat, and the guests could eat the bottom part (this saved me from having to make another cake!) I found this super cute cake topper on Amazon, and it was the perfect addition to the rodeo themed cake! You will need to be extra careful removing the topper from its packaging! The thin wood and small cuts makes it easy to break.
Backdrop and Rodeo Balloons
This was one of my favorite decorations at my son’s birthday party! I found this super cute rodeo themed balloon garland kit on amazon. I love ordering from House of Party because their balloon kits have everything you need in them. For tips and tricks, check out my blog post on how to make a balloon garland! The faux barn wood backdrop was made using a thin sheet of luan I picked up at my local lumber store, and this peel and stick wall paper from Amazon. This backdrop was so simple and inexpensive to make and it was so great for photos!
DIY Rope Art
These decorative pieces were fun to make as well. It is simply a mixture of cornstarch and wood glue painted on jute twine. To make this project easier, you will also need a lot of quilting pins or tiny nails and parchment paper.
Highchair Banner
I am so proud of how this highchair banner turned out, and it was made entirely out of scrap pieces of fabric. Thankfully my mom is a hoarder and has a scrap of every piece of fabric she has ever bought. For this I used some jute twine and fabric cut into 1 in. x 2 ft. strips. Simply find the middle of the fabric and tie it around the twine. I did the same pattern on each side of the pendant so it would be more uniform. The #1 and cowboy hat was hand stitched onto a piece of burlap that was then sewn onto the twine.
- TIP: If you don’t have a lot of scrap fabric laying around, another good way to come up with cheap fabric is by going to your local thrift store. You can often find clothing to cut into strips for just a few cents.
Outfit
Sadly, I do now have a good picture to share with y’all, but my little one looked absolutely adorable in this Wrangler diaper cover. He wore this diaper cover while he *attempted* to eat his cow print smash cake! This was one of our guests’ favorite part about the whole party.
I hope you have enjoyed this “behind the scenes look” at my son’s My First Rodeo Birthday Party!
