Grapevine wreaths are so fun and easy to make! Once you learn how to make, them the decor possibilities are endless. Grapevine wreaths are relatively inexpensive to buy, but if you have access to vines, they are even cheaper to DIY. See how I made this wreath in under 30 minutes and decorated it with fall grasses from the field.
Finding Vines
If you have access to a lot of land, finding a vine to shape into a wreath shouldn’t be too hard. Muscadine grape vines grow wild, and they are usually not hard to find. Some type of grapevine in the best kind of vine to use because it is most pliable and has little curly tendrils to help hold things together. If you cannot find any type of grape vine, you can also use other vines as well. Virginia Creeper and Kudzu are both types of invasive species that can be used to make a vine wreath.
- It is important to know what type of vine you are dealing with! The last thing you want to do is twist up a Poison Ivy vine! If the vine has leaves in clusters of 3, it is best to just leave it alone because it could be Poison Ivy.
- Virginia Creeper looks a lot like Poison Ivy, but its leaves are in clusters of 5
Easy DIY Grapevine Wreath
Once you have gathered your vine, it is time to start shaping it into a wreath. Since this is a woody material, it is best to either shape the vine as soon as it is picked or soak it in water for a few hours. Soaking the vine will make it more pliable and easier to work with. I have made a wreath with unsoaked freshly picked vine before that turned out just fine.
I like to stretch out the vine and take off all the green leaves first. After that, I find the middle and loop it into a circle. This circle needs to be however big or small you want your wreath to be. From here, wrap the two ends of the vine around the circle. It will start out looking like this:
Continue wrapping more vines around the circle until the wreath is the size you want it to be. Try not to wrap the vines too tightly because you want to have room to decorate it when the time comes. Once you get the grapevine wreath made, the decorating possibilities are endless.
How to Decorate a Grapevine Wreath
While I was out gathering vine to make my wreath, I also gathered a few fall stems to decorate my wreath with. I was able to find some foxtails, beautiful purple colored Autumn grass, and some wild Chinese Lantern Vine.
When decorating a grapevine wreath, the possibilities are endless. You can stick cedar and red berries in it for Christmas and winter, or you could tie a bow to it. Some people even use grapevine wreaths to grow succulents.
Happy DIYing!
